Getting an education isn’t always easy for children. Adding a disability could make getting an education even more difficult for them. Did you know that more than six million children between the age of six and 21 will be getting services for special education?

If your child has a disability here is some important information needed before your child heads out to school.

Understanding your Child’s Needs

Students with disabilities are required to take a state test and have their final scores reported. These standardized tests will be fixed if the child isn’t able to take the statewide test. Make sure your child asks for special accommodations from his or her teachers. This could be repeating information or allowing more time for homework or to take a test.

Join Support Groups

You are not alone. There are millions of other children going through the same thing your child is. It’s nice having a community of parents who understand your concerns, questions and frustrations. Sharing experiences is a great way for other parents who are just learning of their child’s disability. Support groups also help with the tools and resources needed for your child to successfully make it through school.

Purchase Education Materials

There are tons of educational materials that will help answer questions that many parents with children with disabilities have. If you child has a mental-health disorder then getting books that will help strengthen his or hers social and listening skills will be beneficial.  There are many websites out there dedicating in letting people know about the different types of products and books that can be purchased for children with disabilities.

Becoming a Teacher

Becoming an educator can be a very rewarding career and you can work in a variety of situations with different types of people. There are so many options with this career. If you have good communication, organization, and social skills, you may consider becoming a teacher.

Training

The amount of college you attend depends on the type of teaching you want to do. You can become a teacher’s aid, public school teacher, private tutor, special education instructor, professor, or choose from a variety of other jobs. First, you have to decide what type of teacher you want to be and what age group you will teach. For most teachers you will have to receive a bachelor’s degree and a teaching license from your state. Start by researching and applying to accredited colleges, and then check for additional requirements.
